Notice period of 90 days: can you leave early?

Early release, buyout or adjusting leave: three practical ways to shorten a long notice period, and what not to do.

A 90-day notice period is common in Indian IT, and many new employers want you sooner. If you need to leave your notice period early, you have three practical options.

Option 1: ask for early release

Ask your manager, with a clear handover plan: "I have documented my modules and can train [name] over the next three weeks. Could we agree on an earlier last day?" Get the approved date from HR in writing.

Option 2: buy out the remaining days

Your contract may allow you to pay salary for the unserved days. Estimate the amount:

Ask your new employer whether they will cover the buyout. Many do for roles they need filled quickly.

Option 3: adjust leave

Some companies let you set unused leave against your notice period. Check your HR policy.

What not to do

Do not simply stop going to work. You may not get a relieving letter, and your new employer's background check usually asks for one.

The full exit checklist is in the job switch playbook.

Common questions

Who pays the notice period buyout?
You do, unless your new employer agrees to cover it. Ask the new company before you agree to anything.
