Step 4 of your job switch: Negotiate

How to answer "What is your expected CTC?" without underselling

Give a range you can defend, and know your in-hand number before you say it. Scripts for current and expected CTC questions.

"What is your expected CTC?" is where most people lose money in a job switch. A good expected CTC answer is a range you can defend, given after you know what the number means for your monthly pay.

Know your in-hand number first

CTC includes variable pay, employer PF and sometimes gratuity and insurance. Two offers with the same CTC can pay very different amounts each month. Work out what you need in hand, then convert it to CTC with the in-hand salary calculator.

Research the market rate

Ask friends in similar roles, check salary data on job portals and note what recruiters say on calls. You want a realistic range for your skills, experience and city.

Give a range, anchored high

"Based on my experience and the role, I am looking at 14 to 16 lakh CTC." The lower end should be a number you are genuinely happy with.

If they ask your current CTC

Be honest; companies often verify it. Then move back to the role: "My current CTC is 8 lakh. For this role, with the responsibilities we discussed, I am looking at 14 to 16 lakh."

Negotiate the whole offer

If they cannot move on fixed pay, ask about a joining bonus, a review after six months or a higher fixed share instead of variable pay. Compare two offers properly with the offer comparison calculator.

Once you accept, move to step 5: the job switch playbook.

Common questions

Should I tell my current CTC?
Be honest, because many companies verify it. Then bring the discussion back to the value of the new role.
How big a hike should I ask for?
It depends on the market rate for your skills, not on your current salary. Research the range for the role and city first.
