UPI payment failed but money debited? Do this step by step
How to check the real status, raise a complaint in your UPI app and escalate if the refund does not arrive.
A UPI payment failed but money debited from your account is common, and in most cases the money comes back on its own within a day. Here is how to check the real status and what to do if it does not.
Step 1: check the transaction status
Open the UPI app you paid with and find the transaction. Note the UPI reference number (UTR). The status will usually be one of these:
- Failed: the money should be reversed automatically
- Pending: wait; most pending payments settle within hours
- Success: the receiver got the money, even if their screen showed an error
Step 2: wait for the automatic reversal
RBI's turnaround-time rules require banks to reverse a failed UPI debit quickly, by the next working day (T+1). If the reversal is late, the rules provide compensation for each day of delay. Check your bank statement, not only the app.
Step 3: raise a complaint in the app
If the money has not come back after one working day:
- Open the transaction in your UPI app
- Tap "Raise dispute" or "Report issue"
- Choose "Amount debited but not credited" and submit with the UTR
Step 4: escalate if needed
If the app does not resolve it, contact your bank with the UTR. If the bank does not resolve it within 30 days, you can file a complaint under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme on the RBI complaint portal.
Prevent it next time
Avoid paying on a weak network, and do not retry immediately after a failure. Wait for the first attempt to show a final status, or you may pay twice.
